Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its full shape, strength, and appearance. They are typically recommended when a tooth is too compromised for a filling alone, after extensive decay, a fracture, or root canal treatment. At This Is It Dental, crowns are designed and fitted with sub-millimetre precision, using only metal-free ceramic materials that look and behave like natural teeth.
Why Our Approach Is Different
A crown is only as good as the margin between it and the tooth it sits on. If that margin is not perfectly flush, bacteria enter the microscopic gap and begin destroying the biological tooth from within, silently, without symptoms, until significant damage has been done. Dr. Rena Uberoi prepares teeth with extreme structural precision under high magnification, which makes a material difference to the clinical outcome.
We have entirely replaced messy, uncomfortable putty impression trays with 3D digital intraoral scanning. This technology captures an incredibly precise virtual model of your prepared tooth and opposing bite, which is instantly transmitted to our elite partner laboratory in London to mill a restoration that fits your bite with sub-millimetre accuracy.
The Clinical Process
Appointment 1: Preparation & Digital Scanning
Appointment 2: Flawless Integration
-
Diagnostics & Anaesthesia
Digital X-rays assess root health and bone levels before any preparation begins. A highly effective local anaesthetic is administered, we do not begin reshaping until you are completely numb.
-
Conservative Reshaping
We carefully reduce and contour the damaged outer layers of the tooth, creating a secure, geometrically precise foundation to accommodate the ceramic crown while preserving as much underlying structure as possible.
-
3D Digital Scan
An advanced intraoral scanner captures a highly accurate digital blueprint of the prepared tooth and your opposing bite, instantly transmitted to our master ceramist in London.
-
Provisional Restoration
Before you leave, we fabricate and temporarily bond a custom-shaped provisional crown. This protects the prepared tooth from sensitivity and maintains your bite while the definitive crown is being crafted.
-
Assessment & Bonding
Approximately two weeks later, we trial the bespoke ceramic restoration, meticulously evaluating margins under magnification, contact points, and shade harmony against your adjacent teeth. Once you and the clinician are completely satisfied, the crown is permanently bonded using medical-grade adhesive resin.
Premium materials
We do not use porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns. Metal-based restorations frequently develop a visible dark grey line at the gum line as the gums recede over time, compromising both aesthetics and the natural optical behaviour of the restoration.

Frequently asked questions
Will my crown look unnatural or show a dark line at the gum?
No. That grey metallic line is a feature of older porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. Because we use exclusively all-ceramic, metal-free materials, E.max and Zirconia, your crown will maintain a seamless, entirely natural transition at the gum line indefinitely.
Is crown preparation painful?
The entire procedure is performed under effective local anaesthesia. You will feel pressure and vibration during the reshaping, but not pain. We move strictly at your pace throughout.
How long can I expect a ceramic crown to last?
With excellent oral hygiene, regular professional hygiene cleanings, and a balanced bite, a premium ceramic crown typically lasts between 10 and 15 years, and frequently considerably longer. The ceramic material itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth structure underneath it can, making consistent home care vital.
What happens if I grind my teeth at night?
Nocturnal bruxism applies immense mechanical pressure that can chip or fracture ceramic restorations over time. If signs of grinding are identified during your evaluation, as they often are, Dr. Uberoi will recommend fabricating a custom-milled night guard or occlusal splint as part of your treatment plan.
