Restorative dentistry
Dental crowns
A full-coverage ceramic cap that restores a damaged, cracked or root-treated tooth to its original strength and appearance.
Dental crowns at a glance
Dental crowns at This Is It Dental use full ceramic options — zirconia or emax — with PFM discussed when clinically appropriate. Each crown is custom-made to restore strength and a natural appearance.
Your written plan confirms the material, shade, number of crowns and whether a temporary crown is needed while the laboratory fabricates the permanent restoration. We take a digital scan rather than impressions for a more accurate fit.
Crowns are also used to restore dental implants and to protect teeth after root canal treatment. If a tooth is borderline — where a crown might or might not be the right call — we'll show you the clinical evidence and let you make an informed decision.
Quick overview
What is a crown?
A custom-made ceramic cap that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth. It restores the tooth's shape, strength and appearance and is permanently cemented in place.
Who needs one?
Patients with teeth that are cracked, heavily broken down, have large failing fillings, or have been root-treated and need protecting. Also used on implants as the visible restoration.
Alternatives
A large composite filling can restore some broken-down teeth but may not provide the same strength or longevity. An inlay or onlay is a mid-point option we'll discuss if appropriate.
Why choose a crown?
Full tooth protection
Covers the entire tooth, preventing further fracture or breakdown.
Natural appearance
Full ceramic crowns are indistinguishable from natural teeth.
Long-lasting
Well-fitted ceramic crowns routinely last 15 years or more.
Your crown journey
Crown treatment takes two appointments approximately two weeks apart.
- 1 Appointment 1 · ~60 min
Tooth preparation & digital scan
The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic, a digital scan is taken, shade chosen, and a temporary crown fitted while the lab fabricates the permanent restoration.
- 2 10–14 days later
Laboratory fabrication
Your ceramic crown is made in a specialist dental laboratory to the exact fit and shade prescription.
- 3 Appointment 2 · ~45 min
Fit & cementation
The temporary is removed, the permanent crown tried in, shade verified in natural light, then permanently cemented.
- 4 6–12 months later
Routine review
Crown longevity and margins checked at your regular exam — no separate appointment needed.

Frequently asked questions
Does it hurt?
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic; the tooth may be sensitive for a few days afterwards, which is normal.
How long will it last?
Ceramic crowns typically last 15+ years with good oral hygiene and regular check-ups.
Can a crowned tooth get decay?
Yes — the margin where the crown meets the tooth is vulnerable; regular hygiene visits and good brushing are important.
What if my tooth needs a root canal after crowning?
Root canal treatment can be done through a crown in most cases — the crown rarely needs replacing.
