Restorative dentistry

White fillings

Tooth-coloured composite resin fillings that restore decayed or damaged teeth — indistinguishable from natural tooth structure.

White fillings at a glance

White fillings use composite resin shade-matched to your natural tooth — we can also replace existing amalgam fillings when clinically appropriate, using rubber dam isolation during removal.

We use a layering technique with multiple composite shades to match the translucency and colour of your natural tooth — not just a single shade applied in one go. For larger restorations we'll advise whether a filling or an inlay/onlay or crown is the more durable choice.

If you're replacing existing amalgam fillings, we use rubber dam isolation to contain mercury vapour during removal — a precaution we take as standard, not as an optional upgrade.

Quick overview

What is it?

A composite resin material bonded directly into a cleaned cavity, built up in layers, then shaped and polished to blend with the surrounding tooth.

Who is it for?

Anyone with a new cavity or an existing silver (amalgam) filling they'd like replaced with a tooth-coloured restoration.

Alternatives

For larger cavities, an inlay, onlay or crown offers better long-term strength. We'll tell you which is clinically appropriate — not just which costs more.

Why choose white fillings?

Tooth-coloured

Completely invisible compared to silver amalgam fillings.

Conservative

Less tooth structure is removed compared to older amalgam techniques.

Same-day

New fillings and most replacements are completed in a single visit.

Your filling journey

White fillings are completed in a single appointment of 30 to 60 minutes per tooth.

  1. 1
    Start of appointment

    Anaesthetic & cavity preparation

Local anaesthetic is given where needed; any decay is removed and the cavity cleaned and shaped.

  2. 2
    During appointment

    Bonding agent application

A bonding agent is applied to help the composite adhere firmly to the tooth structure.

  3. 3
    During appointment

    Composite layering & curing

Composite is applied in thin layers, each cured with a blue light, until the cavity is filled and the tooth shape restored.

  4. 4
    End of appointment

    Shaping, polishing & bite check

The filling is polished to a natural surface and your bite is checked — you leave with a completed restoration.

Frequently asked questions

Are white fillings as strong as silver?

For small to medium cavities yes; for very large restorations we may recommend an inlay or crown for better long-term strength.

Can all amalgam fillings be replaced?

Usually yes, but we assess each case — sometimes an old amalgam that's intact is better left alone.

Will it match my tooth exactly?

We use multiple shades and a layering technique to blend with natural tooth colour and translucency.

How long do composite fillings last?

Typically 7–10 years depending on size and location; smaller fillings in low-stress areas last longer.
